In short
- A chipped, broken or cracked tooth is usually not serious, and a dentist can normally repair it (NHS, 2025).
- If a piece breaks off, keep it in milk or saliva and bring it to the dentist, who may be able to glue it back on (NHS, 2025).
- Small chips are usually fixed with bonding, larger front-tooth damage with a veneer, and teeth that have lost a lot of structure with a crown.
- Severe pain, swelling or pink tissue showing in the middle of the tooth means the nerve may be exposed and you need urgent care.
What Should You Do in the First 24 Hours?
Save any broken piece, protect the tooth and book a dentist as soon as you can. These steps follow NHS advice and common UK first-aid guidance (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
- Find the broken piece. Put it in milk or saliva and take it with you. A dentist may be able to bond it back on.
- Rinse and check the tooth. Rinse with warm water and look for pink or red tissue in the centre of the break, which suggests the nerve is exposed.
- Control pain and bleeding. Bite on clean gauze for about 20 minutes if it bleeds, and take paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed on the packet.
- Cover sharp edges. Dental wax from a pharmacy, or sugar-free gum, protects your tongue and cheek.
- Protect the tooth. Eat soft food, avoid very hot or cold drinks and chew on the other side.
- Call a dentist. If your dentist is closed, their answerphone may give instructions; in the UK, NHS 111 can advise if you have no dentist. Do not go to a GP, who cannot provide dental treatment (NHS, 2025).
Is a Chipped Tooth an Emergency?
Most chipped teeth are not emergencies and can wait for a routine appointment. Fractured teeth with severe pain are treated as urgent, and some signs mean you should be seen the same or next day (Dentists Closeby, 2026, citing NHS England guidance).
Get urgent help if you have:
- severe pain that painkillers do not control
- red or pink tissue visible in the centre of the tooth (a possible exposed nerve)
- bleeding that will not stop
- swelling spreading across your face
- a very loose tooth or a large piece of tooth missing
A routine appointment is usually fine if:
- the chip is small and painless
- there is no sensitivity to hot or cold
- only the white outer layer is damaged
- you can eat and drink normally
For severe facial swelling or bleeding that will not stop, go to A&E.
Chipped, Cracked or Broken: What Is the Difference?
The right repair depends on how deep the damage goes. A tooth has three layers: hard white enamel on the outside, softer yellowish dentine beneath it, and the pulp in the centre, which holds the nerve and blood vessels (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
| Damage | What you see | Usual treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Minor chip (enamel only) | Small piece missing, white throughout, no pain | Smoothing or bonding |
| Moderate chip (into dentine) | Yellow or beige area; sensitive to cold or chewing | Bonding, veneer or crown |
| Severe break (pulp exposed) | Red or pink tissue in the centre; severe pain | Root canal treatment, then a crown |
Cracks are different from chips. The American Association of Endodontists classifies cracks into five types: craze lines, fractured cusp, cracked tooth, split tooth and vertical root fracture (AAE, 2008). Craze lines affect only the enamel and are present on most adult teeth, while the other types start on the biting surface and run deeper toward the root.
Cracks other than craze lines are found most often in back teeth (AAE, 2008). They are harder to spot than chips, so discomfort when chewing is worth having checked even if nothing looks broken.
Bonding vs Veneer vs Crown: Which Repair Do You Need?
Bonding suits small chips, a veneer suits larger damage on a front tooth, and a crown suits a tooth that has lost a lot of structure. If the nerve is exposed, root canal treatment comes first. UK prices and lifespans below are from Dentists Closeby (2026); prices checked 25 October 2026.
| Repair | Best for | UK private price | Typical lifespan | Tooth reduction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smoothing / contouring | Tiny enamel chips | £50–300 | Permanent | Very small amount of enamel |
| Composite bonding | Small to moderate chips | £150–450 per tooth | 5–7 years | Little or none |
| Composite veneer | Moderate front-tooth chips | £200–850 per tooth | 5–7 years | Little |
| Porcelain veneer | Larger front-tooth damage | £700–1,400 per tooth | 10–15 years | Some enamel removed |
| Crown | Major structure loss, back teeth | £500–1,400 per tooth | 10–15 years | Tooth shaped all round |
| Root canal + crown | Exposed or damaged nerve | £600–2,500 | Depends on the crown | Tooth shaped all round |
Composite bonding
Composite bonding repairs a chip by layering tooth-coloured resin onto the tooth and hardening it with a curing light. It is usually done in one visit, often without drilling or anaesthetic (composite bonding in Turkey). Bonding can chip again over time, but a chipped bond is simple and inexpensive to repair.
Veneers
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth, either built up in composite or made in porcelain. Porcelain veneers last well: a 2021 systematic review of 25 studies and 6,500 veneers estimated 95.5% survival at 10 years (Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2021). Fracture was the most common problem, followed by debonding, and veneers that covered the biting edge failed less often.
Matching a single veneer to the neighbouring teeth is harder than matching a set, which is why a single veneer is usually more expensive per tooth (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
Crowns
A crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth. It is the usual choice when too much of the tooth has been lost for bonding or a veneer to work (Dentists Closeby, 2026). Crowns are among the treatments the NHS lists for a broken tooth (NHS, 2025). See dental crowns cost in Turkey for materials and prices.
Root canal treatment
When a break reaches the pulp, root canal treatment removes the damaged nerve before the tooth is rebuilt, usually with a crown (NHS, 2025). See root canal treatment price in Turkey.
How Much Does It Cost to Fix a Chipped or Broken Tooth?
In the UK, an NHS repair in England costs £27.90–332.10 depending on the band, while private repairs range from about £50 for smoothing to £2,500 for a root canal and crown (Dentists Closeby, 2026). At Dr. Wonder Clinic in Istanbul, bonding starts at $80–150 per tooth and crowns at £120–250 per tooth. Prices checked 25 October 2026.
| Treatment | NHS England | UK private | Dr. Wonder Clinic, Istanbul |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composite bonding | £76.60 (Band 2) | £150–450 per tooth | $80–150 per tooth |
| Porcelain veneer | Not usually offered | £700–1,400 per tooth | $250–450 per tooth |
| Crown | £332.10 (Band 3) | £500–1,400 per tooth | £120–250 per tooth |
| Root canal + crown | £332.10 (Band 3) | £600–2,500 | See root canal prices |
Clinic prices come from the clinic’s composite bonding and dental crown price guides. The final quote depends on how deep the damage goes and which material you choose.

What Most Broken Tooth Guides Don’t Tell You
The cheapest repair today is not always the cheapest repair over ten years. The right choice depends on how much healthy tooth is left and how long you need the repair to last.
A small chip is still worth a check. A chip that does not hurt can wait for a routine appointment, but sharp edges can cut the tongue or cheek, and the damage can be deeper than it looks (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
Teeth do not heal. A chip or crack stays the same or gets worse; enamel does not grow back (Dentists Closeby, 2026). Delaying a simple repair can turn a bonding job into a crown or root canal.
Do not reach for a crown too early. Bonding and veneers keep more of your natural tooth than a crown, which shapes the tooth all round. For a chipped front tooth, the least invasive repair that lasts is usually the better first choice.
Grinding shortens the life of every repair. Teeth grinding (bruxism) is thought to affect how long veneers survive (Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2021), and repairs in people who grind tend to need replacing sooner (Dentists Closeby, 2026). A night guard protects the repair as well as your teeth. See dental splints cost.
Chipped Tooth FAQ
Can a chipped tooth heal on its own?
No. Tooth enamel does not regenerate, so a chip stays the same or gets worse without treatment (Dentists Closeby, 2026). Even a small chip should be checked to prevent further damage.
How long can I leave a chipped tooth?
A small chip with no symptoms can usually wait a few days for a routine appointment. A break with pain, sensitivity or visible pink tissue should be treated within 24–48 hours (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
Can the NHS fix a chipped tooth?
Yes. In England, bonding falls under Band 2 (£76.60) and crowns under Band 3 (£332.10); cosmetic veneers are usually only available privately (Dentists Closeby, 2026).
Can a broken piece of tooth be glued back on?
Sometimes. Keep the fragment in milk or saliva and bring it to your appointment; the dentist may be able to bond it back in place (NHS, 2025).
Is bonding or a veneer better for a chipped front tooth?
Bonding is usually the first choice for a small chip because it is quick, low-cost and keeps your natural tooth. A porcelain veneer suits larger damage or a tooth that also needs a colour or shape change, and lasts longer at 10–15 years (Dentists Closeby, 2026). See composite veneers vs porcelain veneers.
Next Step: Get the Damage Assessed
The right repair for a chipped or broken tooth depends on how deep the damage goes, which only an examination and X-ray can show. Once that is known, the choice between bonding, a veneer, a crown or root canal treatment is usually straightforward.
If you are in pain or see pink tissue in the tooth, see a local dentist first. For a planned repair, Dr. Wonder Clinic offers a free consultation: send a clear photo of the tooth through the Get an Offer form or our contact page, and our team will reply within 24 hours.
